ESV is trying to be more word-for-word to retain the original language structure (and possibly some nuances). NIV is trying to be a little more thought-for-thought and so sometimes does its own interpretation of the text for you.
One of the big deals about the ESV Study Bible, though, is the work that has gone into the stuff around the text. So things like the notes, the charts, etc. And the online-ness
